A Children's Movie Review: The Land Before Time

The Land Before Time Series

One of the most beloved movie sagas for the whole family are the enchanting and epic Land Before Time movies.  As a child, I remember seeing the first of these movies with my mom in the theater and being mesmerized by the majesty of the dinosaur and the captivating story that had me silent and attentive through the whole film, which is the alot to be said for a 5 year old in a theater.
The first LBT movie was released in 1988, and had a dark and mysterious energy to it, with low lighting and shadows combined with some creepy symphony music.  The movie was created by Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas, which combined the minds of 2 creative geniuses to make a truly original piece that appealed to the whole family.   The story features the birth of Littlefoot, the long neck (brachiosaurus), Cera the 3-horn(triceratops), Duckie, which is a swimming dinosaur that I am not familiar with the common name of, Spike, the Spike-tail(stegosaurus), and Petrie the flyer(pteranadon), and the journey of the dinosaurs to the great valley, a land of food and shelter from danger.  In the plot, Littlefoot's mother is killed by a ferocious T-Rex, and an earthquake separates the children from the rest of the herds, who are left to rely on one another to make it to the Great Valley before they starve or are eaten by the sharptooth(t-rex).

The next movie was released 6 years later in 1994, and was equally as charming as the original.  This new movie featured a ensemble of sing along songs and new characters which brought the movie to life and lightened the dark tone of the original movie.   The characters personalities have developed and become more diverse and constant, such as Petries cowardice and Cera's stubbornness.  All the following movies are similar to this one, with lots of moral lessons and good principals such as sharing and teamwork, and lots of heartwarming songs that have the kids begging to watch them over and over again.   There are 13 movies by number, and 2 sing-along-songs videos for your collection.
My collection was started in 1995 by my mother and became my little brothers favorite videos for years to come.  We have videos 1-6, and all have been played so many times the tracking is hard to get right and the picture quality is prehistoric.  Now, my children of 9, 5, and 3 all zone out for hours on the stories handed down them from back when good morals were more widespread in kids movies.  They are a great alternative to modern cartoons which show violence, lack morals, and have more innuendo than the FCC ever allowed when I was young.  So are many other 80's and 90's animated movies and cartoons.  Gen-x cartoons are far superior, and I'm sure everyone who used to watch Looney Tunes and Super Mario Brothers agrees with me!
So, if you would like a movie series that will hypnotize your children for hours and not ruin their minds, The Land Before Time movies are a must have for any parents who want a moral and family oriented movie collection.  You and your kids and their kids will enjoy these wonderful movies for years to come.
